On your own boundary road, about 1.3 kilometres away. The shortest trip of any suburb we serve, for a suburb with school-age children and grandparents in the same street.
Canterbury Road is Blackburn South’s northern boundary, and 129A Canterbury Road sits on it. That makes Whitehorse Dental about 1.3 kilometres from the middle of the suburb, a two to three minute drive, and the shortest trip of any suburb we write about. Blackburn South carries the highest share of couples with children of the suburbs south of us and, at the same time, more than a fifth of residents aged 65 or over, so the appointments that get booked here are often for two or three generations of the same household in one block. On-site parking, wheelchair access, and Saturday mornings.

Blackburn South is bordered by Canterbury Road to the north, Middleborough Road, Eley Road, and an irregular line east of Blackburn Road. Nearly every other suburb in our catchment involves a decision about which arterial to take. From Blackburn South there is no decision: your northern boundary is our street. Coming from the Eley Park end it is nearer 2.7 kilometres, still under five minutes without traffic.
Without a car, the 703 SmartBus is the useful one. It runs up Blackburn Road at roughly 10 to 15 minute intervals through the day and terminates at Blackburn station on South Parade, crossing Canterbury Road on the way. Route 735 comes through via Eley Road and serves the Eley Park Community Centre at 87 Eley Road, and route 736 also finishes at Blackburn station.
At the 2021 Census, 51.9% of Blackburn South families were couples with children, the highest share among the suburbs south and east of us, with 17.4% of residents aged 0 to 14. At the same time 21.2% were aged 65 or over. The suburb is 75.8% separate houses, and median weekly household income is $1,861. (ABS 2021 Census, Blackburn South SAL20254.)
A suburb with that shape produces a particular kind of booking: not one person, but a household. Children from Orchard Grove Primary School or St Luke the Evangelist, a parent in their late forties with a cracked molar, and a grandparent needing a denture reline, all wanting to come at once. Back-to-back appointments work better than simultaneous ones, and Saturday mornings go first, so it helps to say on the phone that you are booking for several people.
Blackburn South peaks in the 45 to 49 and 50 to 54 brackets, at 7.1% and 7.3% of residents. That is the decade when teeth restored in the 1980s and 1990s tend to give way. The filling is intact; the tooth around it has flexed for thirty years and a cusp finally shears off.
Dr Melissa Huang handles the crown and complex occlusal work. The sequence matters more than the material: gum disease is treated and stabilised before restorative work, because inflamed gums bleed and seep during a crown preparation, contaminating the field exactly where the margin is being cut and the scan taken, and because gums recede once the inflammation resolves, exposing the margin of a crown fitted too early. Preparation is done under rubber dam, with air abrasion to improve bond strength and moisture control maintained throughout, and the scan is taken with a Medit intraoral scanner rather than impression material.
Crowns are made in e.max, zirconia, gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal, chosen for the position and the bite. As national context, the 2022 ADA fee survey reported an average of $1,678 for a full veneered indirect crown under item 615, in a range of $1,250 to $2,100; that is an Australian average, not our fee, and yours comes in a written plan after assessment. Blackburn South is home to Aurora School at 96 Holland Road, a Victorian Department of Education specialist school for Deaf and deafblind children, running early intervention, early education and deafblind education programs. Special needs dentistry is a service we offer, and families in this part of the suburb ask about it more than most.
What that means in practice, honestly stated: nobody here signs in Auslan, so we plan around the communication approach the family already uses rather than improvising on the day. What we can put on the table is time and preparation. A first appointment is a full hour with the first 10 to 30 minutes spent talking, not examining. Happy gas and oral premedication are available. Silver diamine fluoride can arrest decay on some teeth with a brush-on application and no drilling, which removes the noise and the vibration from the equation entirely. There are ceiling-mounted TVs and music of the patient’s choice. See dental anxiety management and kids no-drill dentistry.
Blackburn South sits about 16 kilometres east of the CBD in the City of Whitehorse, with 10,939 residents at the 2021 Census. Its green spine is the Wurundjeri Walk Trail, a 20-hectare linear park running most of the way between Middleborough and Blackburn Roads, taking in the Wurundjeri Wetlands completed in 2001 and Orchard Grove Reserve, and joining the Gardiners Creek Trail at its western end near the Box Hill Golf Course. Eley Park and Mirrabooka Oval carry much of the local sport, and the Canterbury Road shops handle the groceries.
English only is spoken at home by 60.5% of residents here, with Mandarin at 14.1%, Cantonese at 4.7% and Greek at 2.8%. Consultations are available in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Teochew and Shanghainese, which for a suburb where grandparents and grandchildren often live within a few streets of each other tends to matter across generations rather than within one.

About 1.3 kilometres from the middle of the suburb, which is a two to three minute drive without traffic and the shortest trip of any suburb we write a page for. The reason is simple: Canterbury Road is Blackburn South’s own northern boundary, and 129A Canterbury Road sits on it. There is no arterial to cross and no freeway involved, and there is on-site parking when you arrive. From Eley Park at the far side of the suburb it is closer to 2.7 kilometres.
Yes. The 703 SmartBus runs up Blackburn Road at roughly 10 to 15 minute intervals during the day and terminates at Blackburn station on South Parade, crossing Canterbury Road on the way. Route 735 runs through Blackburn South via Eley Road and serves the Eley Park Community Centre, and route 736 also terminates at Blackburn station. There is no railway station inside Blackburn South, but Laburnum and Blackburn stations sit just to the north on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines, and Blackburn station is a short walk from us.
Yes. Special needs dentistry is part of what we do, and Blackburn South is home to Aurora School at 96 Holland Road, a Department of Education specialist school for Deaf and deafblind children running early intervention, early education and deafblind programs. Being honest about the limits: nobody here signs in Auslan, so we work with whatever communication approach the family already uses, and we plan around it rather than improvising on the day. What we can offer is time, a first appointment that is a full hour with the first 10 to 30 minutes spent talking rather than examining, happy gas where it helps, silver diamine fluoride to arrest decay without drilling where that is an option, and ceiling-mounted TVs and music of the child’s choice.
Often, and Blackburn South is the suburb where this comes up most. 51.9% of local families are couples with children, the highest share of the southern suburbs we serve, while 21.2% of residents are aged 65 or over and 17.4% are children under 15 (ABS 2021 Census). Practically that means booking back-to-back rather than same-time: a check-up and clean for the children, a crown appointment for a parent, a denture review for a grandparent. Mention the whole household when you call so we can line the times up, and note that Saturday mornings fill fastest for exactly this reason.
Very common at that age, and Blackburn South has a distinct peak in the 45 to 54 brackets. A tooth that was filled decades ago has progressively less of its own structure holding it together, and eventually a wall flexes far enough that a cusp shears off. The assessment decides whether it can be rebuilt with a filling, an onlay or a full crown. If gum disease is present, that gets treated and stabilised first — inflamed gums bleed during a crown preparation, which contaminates the field at the exact moment the margin and the scan are being taken. Crowns here are made in e.max, zirconia, gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal, prepared under rubber dam with air abrasion to improve bond strength.
We do elderly and domiciliary care, so it is worth a phone call to talk through what is actually needed before assuming a trip is impossible. A lot of the time the more practical answer is still an in-practice appointment, because on-site parking puts the walk in at a few metres and the practice is wheelchair accessible, and because denture and gum work is easier with the full setup. Where treatment is done in-practice we split it into several shorter appointments rather than one long one. We accept DVA cards.
